6 Signs You Need a New Driver Shaft
Your driver head might be fine. The stock shaft it came with might not be. Here are the most common signs a shaft upgrade will help, and what to look for.
1. Your drives balloon and fall out of the sky
A high, climbing flight that drops short usually means too much spin. A lower-launch, lower-spin profile (like a Denali Black or HZRDUS Black) can flatten the flight and add roll.
2. Your drives come out low and never get up
Not enough launch costs carry. A higher-launch profile (like a Denali Red or Project X Cypher) helps get the ball in the air, especially at moderate swing speeds.
3. You've lost swing speed over the years
If you're still playing the stiff flex you used 10 years ago, it may be too firm for your swing today. Dropping a flex, or going lighter, often gets launch and distance back.
4. You're fighting a miss you can't fix
A shaft that's too stiff can make it harder to square the face, and one that's too soft can feel unpredictable at impact. The wrong shaft won't cause every slice or hook, but the right one makes your good swings more repeatable.
5. The club feels too light or too heavy
If you lose control of the club at the top or rush your transition, a slightly heavier shaft can smooth your tempo. If you're tired by the back nine, a lighter shaft can help you keep your speed.
6. You're playing a "made-for" stock shaft
Many drivers ship with stock shafts built to a price. An aftermarket shaft matched to your speed and ball flight is one of the most cost-effective upgrades in golf, and you keep the head you already like.
