How to Choose a Driver Shaft: Flex, Weight & Launch

1. Start with swing speed: flex

Flex is the first thing to get right. A shaft that's too stiff for your swing tends to launch low and leak right. One that's too soft can balloon, hook, or feel unpredictable at impact. Use your driver swing speed (from a launch monitor or a fitting) as the starting point:

Driver swing speed Typical flex
Under 72 mph Ladies (L)
72–83 mph Senior (A)
84–96 mph Regular (R)
97–104 mph Stiff (S)
105+ mph X-Stiff (X)

No launch monitor? A rough guide: if you carry your driver about 200 yards you're likely around 85–90 mph, and about 240 yards is closer to 100 mph. If you're between flexes, tempo breaks the tie. Smooth swingers usually go softer, and quick, aggressive transitions usually go firmer.

2. Then choose weight

Most driver shafts weigh 50–70 grams. Weight affects tempo and control as much as distance:

  • 40–50 g (lightweight): easier to swing faster. Good for moderate swing speeds, seniors, and anyone who feels a driver getting heavy late in the round.
  • 50–60 g: the sweet spot for most golfers.
  • 60–70 g+: more stability for faster or aggressive swings. Often tightens dispersion for strong players.

3. Finally, launch and spin

Look at your ball flight, not just the numbers:

  • Ball climbs and balloons, or falls out of the sky: too much spin. Look at low-launch, low-spin profiles.
  • Low, flat flight that doesn't carry: not enough launch. Look at high-launch profiles.
  • Flight is fine, you just want consistency: stay mid-launch and focus on the right flex and weight.
